the boom of 3D games

Post by jack1974 »

I always do some "market research" and I noticed that those... porn 3d games are exploding on Steam
Some released this month have already 30-50 reviews, and by experience I know they've already made a LOT of money  also checking the Patreon pages of some of them, they make just from that more than what I make with all my revenue sources combined  Of course it's not easy, doing that 3d art takes a lot of work and also very powerful computers.

Anyway that's not the point, I don't particularly like 3D, or better, it needs to be done VERY WELL for me to be attractive. Most of those games use default lighting and the result are like plastic dolls  But it seems it's fine for a lot of people since otherwise they wouldn't sell so much.
Personally I would like to do a 3D because I can do things that with 2D I cannot do - it's more like being a director, you can pick the view you want, have small animations, etc.

Also I wouldn't do those plotless porn games obviously. I would keep doing my usual games but with 3D art.

Being super nitpicky about my work and in particular, the art of my games (even the harsh reviewers had to admit that the art of my games was always at least decent), I wouldn't settle for anything less cute than, for example some of the Until Dawn girls (very cute):

I would never abandon 2D obviously, and perhaps I would even try to see if I can get a anime look in 3D. It's already possible in games but they have custom modeled characters beside cellshading shaders. And it's very difficult/expensive. So for now I am just brainstorming and maybe I could get a powerful PC to make some tests, but no short term plans. It could be nice to make some cash to finance more 2D games of course :)

I wish you success in any 3D games/visual novels you release.
Here's a thought: since most of your current fan base expects 2D art from you, you might want to consider making a porn 3D game using a pseudonym instead of jack1974 or jack norton or your real name.
Why? I like big ones, that's why.

Yes and probably release it on Steam only haha.
Anyway I just made some tests and it's really hard to get good results (as I would like them), so not sure if I'll go on with it

I believe it's the hardcore porn, not the 3D, that sells. Look at something like Love & Sex: Second Base. It's traditional 2D art, "early access" (will probably never be finished), patreon funded and has hundreds of reviews.

Haha I chatted with the guy not long ago. He's doing well indeed. You're right, it's sex and not necessarily 3D that sells.
Well good since I think I have finally found some artists that don't mind drawing more hardcore stuff (which would always be optional of course).
