Dragon Age inquisition early reviews

Post by jack1974 »

I am not going to get the game soon, because... I need to work :) However I read some of the early reviews, and I think I am making the right decisions for Loren 2.
In particular:
Very rarely though are you given a choice whether the best option isn't obvious, and I can't think of a single one that rebounded in an interesting way later on. There's nothing wrong with classic heroic fantasy and do-gooding of course, but here the shades of grey are notable by their absence rather than their intrigue, especially in the wake of other recent offerings like The Witcher 2 and Game of Thrones, where decisions constantly have huge implications. Here, everything remains insular, confined to its own bit of the story rather than being intertwined and paying off when you least expect it. At least, unless I was just unlucky.
Writing down note: choices must have later consequences in my games
It doesn't help that the cast is ridiculously big for a group of people that you're meant to forge connections with. In BioWare tradition, new party members come thick and fast, but here you also have a team of up to four advisors with their own storylines, a castle full of people, a big board of operations and all kinds of distractions. It's just too much at once, with the inevitable result being that most of the team just ends up standing around waiting to be called on.
Writing down note: a cast too big makes interaction too bland and character building difficult. Better use a smaller cast of characters!

The game is surely going to be a good one of course. I am more interesting to observe it and see how I can avoid some problems that reviewers are pointing out already. And is reassuring to see that some of my choices (reducing the cast) seems to be good ideas :)

I can also add one more note - you should make/write more adult games (not porn :) ).
All choices should have consequences not just for the ending, but in during game (not just dialogues, but different storyline). I mean these choices should really change story (for example - 'Bionic Heart'). Moreover, these choices should be not so clearly (not just - kill or save choice, but really questionable choices with unpredictable consequences). Background of your main hero also should change everything.
Games also should have more blood and sexual content (for example - 'Sakura Spirit' or 'A kiss for the petals').
As I see it, the ideal game should be replayable at least several times.

If I put all those things, then I need to get a rating and "age age" on Steam. I can't pay ESRB/PEGI fees since are crazy (for pegi is like 1100 eur!!). I guess I can always make a custom version on my site. Or also ask better what's up, since your mentioned Sakura Spirit doesn't have any official rating agency logo (ESRB/PEGI/whatever) and they still got the age warning. If I can skip the process of using a rating agency, I have no problems doing that, but must be sure.

I never heard about fees to ESRB/PEGI until today(now I understood the problem), but I suppose/believe you can skip this process, because it really strange situation when you want to create interesting game, but you are restricted by ESRB/PEGI.

While I still really enjoy bioware games, I feel a lot of their post-mass effect 2 releases suffer from these problems. Their typical paragon/renegade system mostly devolves into being between the right choice and the acting like a jerk choice. From what this new Dragon Age so far sounds like, its more of the same from bioware...

Really cannot wait to see what you do with Loren 2, whatever approach you ultimately take with the storyline and characters :)

Please do this. The Steam-friendly changes you made in SotW made the whole romance part a little disappointing.

It's also easier to do the "choices have consequences" thing when the consequences don't immediately take effect, otherwise you can just roll back and pick something else. But when stuff you do in Act 2 affects the world in Act 3, you can't just roll-back. (You could reload, but at some point it's easier to just finish the game.) Course it might make the writing more complicated, but maybe you could make a small cast game to compensate. ;)

I'll investigate this more, since last time I asked them, they said I MUST have an official rating. But maybe things have changed. Of course if it's possible, I don't mind doing it (would also save a lot of support question on how to unlock the uncensored version on Steam )

Yes definitely, with a smaller cast that should be possible :)

Let me know your thoughts too. That one was just a review from a reviewer I trust enough, but still just one opinion :)

I'll chime in too, as I find this review to be kind of suspicious, as it contradicts everything we've been told about the game so far, and while Bioware could have missed their target, it seems unlikely that they completely passed by goals they have spoken of throughout the entire development.
I think the reviewer might be suffering from what my friends call "Third installment syndrome" where because a piece of media is third in a series it gets graded much harsher than it should due to expectations.
Granted, I also disagree with the reviewer on one of their main points, which is the one in which the reviewer states that in general Bioware has been making "Right choice or jerk" choices, in Mass Effect 3 there were plenty of times in which there were many shades of grey.
Spoiler:
Sometimes there were choices that you had to really work to unlock that were better, Such as bringing peace to the Geth and Quarians, but if you weren't playing for full completion then it was a hard choice. The one time that I didn't do enough side missions to be able to yell until I brought peace I chose the Geth as in my mind it was the right thing to do, Tali shot herself, I cried, and went back to do side missions. My friends on the other hand, said I don't trust the Geth and let them get wiped out. I have never sabotaged the Genophage cure, but that is based on my personality. For someone else they might agree with the Dalatrass's arguments, the resurgence of the Krogan could be an issue. The Rachni queen, even if you feel sympathetic for her, getting her out still kills a squad of highly skilled Krogan warriors, and puts your friend (Grunt) in harms way. The game was less grey than Dragon Age Origins, but that doesn't mean it was black and white.
