On armour

Post by Anima_ »

Since the weapon list didn't invite much critic here the provisional armour types.
If a class under used by is listed in parenthesis it can get a specialisation to use it later on.
A resist in italics indicates only light protection, parenthesis indicate an optional resistance that is not found on every armour of that type.
Kinetic, Armour Piercing (AP), Explosive and Energy are considered common damage types, the other are considered exotic types. Energy might be split up into Plasma and Optical types, with Energy as a supertype. EMP and Mental damage have no armour resist because the former has no effect on player characters and the later can not be reduced by armour.
  • Personal Armour
Basic armour for support duty combatants. Protects against the most common dangers on the battlefield only.
    • Used by: Psionics, Scouts, Soldiers, Guardians
    • Resists: Kinetic, Explosive
    • EC cost: Low
    • Speed penalty: None
  • Environmental Armour
Has very high protection against a specific damage type.
    • Used by: (Psionics), Scouts, Soldiers, Guardians
    • Resists: Kinetic, (Fire),(Shock),(Cold), (Biological), (Energy), (Explosive)
    • EC cost: Varies
    • Speed penalty: Varies, mostly low
  • Tactical Armour
Front line combat armour, the better models have light protection against an additional specific damage type.
    • Used by: (Scouts), Soldiers, Guardians
    • Resists: Kinetic, Explosive, AP, Energy, (Fire),(Shock),(Cold), (Biological)
    • EC cost: Medium
    • Speed penalty: Medium
  • Reinforced Armour
Heavy armour, even the lower end models have light protection against most damage types.
    • Used by: (Soldiers), Guardians
    • Resists: Kinetic, Explosive, AP, Energy, (Fire),(Shock),(Cold), (Biological)
    • EC cost: High
    • Speed penalty: High
We might also introduce Power Armour, a Guardian exclusive speciality armour that has the same protection as Reinforced Armour, but no speed penalty.

If power armor offers superior protection without the speed penalty, why are not all classes trained in its use? The only reason why scouts will give up the protection of heavier armor is because it interferes with their mobility.

Think of it as a specific armor for the class. It could be an armor that requires specific training to be used that only Guardians can do, otherwise become cumbersome and unusable. A bit like the classes requirements in fantasy games

Unless there is a some big tradeoff like not being able to carry extra equipment, there doesn't seem to be any reason for Guardian to use any other type of armor if power armor provides superior protection without loss of speed.

If the soldier can use the same armor as the guardian and can use better weapons, why I shoulders?

While the armour would have higher EC cost it's mostly an upgrade to reinforced armour that is supposed to be strictly better.

The soldier can't use the same armour. Reinforced armour is restricted to Guardians and later only they can use the powered armour. Besides there are more differences between the classes then what armour and weapons they can use. Guardians for example have the most efficient and effective Fortitude defence.
