Would be sooo nice to have a lady-paladin who would be like that!Much like that anime, Utena *___*

And I have another idea! How bout a character who is death-driven, always reckless about his/her own safety and could put others in danger? He/she could be looking for his/her own death/suicide for some reason and, the player could help him/her to see that there's still a reason to live.(The character would live to complete some objective and after that, he/she would try to die. And if the player did some things during the game, he/she would want to live in the end).

Hmm...I was going to suggest an aristocratic woman who is somewhat disdainful of everyone not on her social level until they prove themselves to her. But...because gender-benders like this are so rare, and because I enjoy novel situations, I like the idea of the female gentlemanly 'prince' type who is assertive and able to sweep a protagonist of either gender off their feet. So I heartily approve of Sylrissa's suggestion and suggest that the character be bi.

After typing the above it dawned on me that to some, Loren might be perceived to fulfill these requirements, but Loren is more barbarian queen in manner and dress than gallant lady knight, and instead of starting out as the lady knight's slave, the protagonist would be courted by her instead. At least that's how I'm envisioning it. Although if the relationship were to turn into something of a rivalry fraught with romantic tension, it might be interesting if a joust or duel were to take place in which the loser would become the "spoils of war" to the winner.

Definitely like the way Loren doesn't fit traditional gender roles in terms of action(WW did a great job on the Amazon society), but I would like the "lady gentleman" character to actually look masculine. Short hair, or a low pony tail, with masculine facial and body features.
jack1974 wrote:Cool, thanks for the suggestions :) About the transgender in PS2 there's Lakadema. In Loren 2 there's Nook that is the reverse (man looking girly) and I think Juliet could be considered a bit boyish (ahem apart her breast ).
I am really liking Lakadema's inclusion, and that Nook is more feminine as well. Juliet definitely has a more masculine personality, although I would say that she still looks very feminine. (Just in a regal way instead of a beautiful or cute way.)

On Lakadema, I remember the discussion about being able to pick what pronouns you use for hir. That said, Lakadema really screams WOMAN to me. Gives off more of a futanari vibe than gender variant, if you will excuse the use of the term. (For those of you who don't know what that means, don't look it up unless you want to get lots of pornographic images. Basically I mean that she is stated not to be female in body but she has all the secondary and tertiary female sex characteristics, such as breasts, long eyelashes, female dress, female facial structure, delicate looking, etc.) Not that it's bad, necessarily, but rather that, while sie is not male or female, sie could probably be taken as female straight out if information about certain body parts was omitted. Of course, her looks are not the only important thing, how sie is treated in the writing is even more important! But that's what I gather on an appearance base only.

I would really like to have characters that don't fit in with traditional gender roles, too. The reason for trans characters as well is because I think it could make some pretty interesting situations. If I'm thinking about, for example, a game set in the US, then a trans character would face certain hardships that would be really interesting to delve into as you pursue their personal story route (if they are romanceable). Although, in games with a very different setting, in the future or in a more accepting society, then the trans character doesn't stand out as much but just the acceptance of their identity being totally fine is also really awesome to me.

I'm really happy with your games and their inclusion of homosexual relationships and gender variant characters! I just wanted to let you know that, as a non-straight trans person, playing your games is really empowering for me. Having it be so open and accepting as an environment, both in your games and on your forums, is really an experience that doesn't exist in the gaming community at large, so the fact that you are making your games the way you are is just wonderful! (Please excuse the gushing, but I really am appreciative!) :3

When I think "masculine facial and body features" I think flat chest, straight hips, broad shoulders, more muscular arms, heavier, more pronounced brow, stronger jaw, and lots of facial and body hair. I don't mind the broad shoulders and stronger jaw so much, not all women are fragile-looking waifs, and thicker arms are ok as long as they retain a certain sleekness and don't get too blocky and veiny, but I'm sorry, when all the rest of those masculine features are added in, an image is created that I don't find particularly attractive. Not that I begrudge you such a character if you're into that, but I'm going to hop off the train at this point. I have nothing against physically strong women, but if they're going to be a romance interest for my characters, I'd still like them to look like women. So if she has a beard, then she's all yours.

I have 0 interest in Nook. To me Nook looks like a 14 year old boy with a girly face. Since Nook is presented as a gay maIe option I don't really concern myself with him. I do agree that Laka's artwork screams woman however, which is why her situation is of somewhat greater concern to me. Thinking about this some, it would seem that most purely straight players like myself would probably prefer a clear dividing line between male romance interests and female ones, which is the opposite of what you desire. On the other hand, I suspect a lot of bi players may enjoy seeing the line blurred. So there may well be a market for the development of such characters.

I don't mind seeing the traditional gender -roles- up-ended. Trans characters need to be handled carefully however, and the player should never be surprised even if the player's character is, as one player's "interesting situation" might be another player's "nightmare".

Aleema warned me about Nook looking too young, and we changed some romance pose because were too ambiguous. The problem I think is also in her body, because beside having a feminine face is also very slim, but not necessarily young (there are adult people with such bodies too) but I admit people can be confused, though I think will be obvious looking at him standing aside other characters that he is an adult character.

As straight player I don't mind a character like Lakadema, but I understand that tastes are tastes. As always will try to experiment a bit, trying to please a higher amount of people. And as said in the past, people don't need to think that Nook took the place of another Jul (or another hot pin-up girl), I would have included another Nook :) There's already a big cast and lots of variety in Loren 2, maybe a bit less in PS2.

personally I hope you continue to experiment and add more characters in future games like Nook and lakadema, as I find them some of the most interesting.

Although I am sure that some people are attracted to super masculine looking females with body hair etc. that is simply not what bifauxnen is. Bifauxnen would resemble "pretty boys" more than "manly men." But if a bifauxnen is dressed in female clothes and looks the same as any other girl, her masculinity not shining through, it's just not the same. Here are some examples of the "aesthetic" I was talking about:

Boyish:

Mature:

The important thing is 1. attitude and 2. aesthetic. My point is that, for instance, the pink haired girl above can only fit the criteria of bifauxnen when she is dressed in masculine clothes because her natural features are very feminine, and she has long hair. Bifauxnen range from more masculine to more feminine, but the entire point is that they must have some kind of masculine appeal both in personality and in looks. (You can't just put any woman in male clothes and call her bifauxnen, at least a little bit of androgyny and masculine charm is required. Otherwise it's just a girl in boys clothes.)

Also, doing things like emphasizing a female characters feminine characteristics, such as breasts or other fan service completely ruins the appeal. It's okay for the character to have breasts, etc, but it must be treated in a masculine fashion. (i.e. they can be there, but they shouldn't get too much attention, or be too sexualized as with female characters.)

On female dwarves with beards... Terry Prachett's DiscWorld series male and female dwarves look indistinguishable, as both have identical bone and facial structures, as well as beards. In fact, they operated as a society never knowing who was what sex, which made it extremely difficult for dwarves to date and find partners at all! At one point, a group of female dwarves decided they wanted it to be known that they were female because it made things easier for them and all the traditional dwarves got really upset about it. It's a pretty hilarious situation. XD

Oh, and I actually like Lakadema, just pointing out that she is very female looking. That's not a bad thing, just pointing it out. :)
